Rate of Chemical ReactionChemical Kinetics

Thermodynamic feasibility of the reaction alone cannot decide the rate of the reaction. Explain with one example.

Expert Answer

Thermodynamics only tells if a reaction can occur ( ΔG<0\Delta G < 0 ), not how fast. Diamond converting to graphite is thermodynamically feasible but kinetically so slow it doesn't happen perceptibly. Similarly, H2+O2H2OH_2 + O_2 \rightarrow H_2O is feasible but negligible at room temp without initiation.
