Why do white fumes appear around a bottle of anhydrous aluminium chloride?

Expert Answer

Anhydrous AlCl3AlCl_3 is partially hydrolysed by atmospheric moisture to liberate HClHCl gas. The white fumes are essentially condensed droplets of hydrochloric acid formed from this gas. Reaction: AlCl3+3H2OAl(OH)3+3HClAlCl_3 + 3H_2O \rightarrow Al(OH)_3 + 3HCl
