Elevation in BP and Depression in FPSolutions

As ice begins to separate from an aqueous salt solution during cooling, how does the freezing point of the remaining liquid change?

Expert Answer

The freezing point decreases continuously. As pure ice separates (solvent removal), the concentration (molality) of the remaining liquid solution increases. According to ΔTf=Kfm\Delta T_f = K_f \cdot m , higher molality leads to a larger depression (lower freezing point).
