Henry's LawSolutions

For a binary solution of volatile liquids, if the solute obeys Henry's Law ( pB=KHχBp_B = K_H \chi_B ) over a certain range, what law must the solvent obey over the same range?

Expert Answer

The solvent must obey Raoult's Law ( pA=pAχAp_A = p_A^\circ \chi_A ). This is a consequence of the Gibbs-Duhem equation. In an ideal dilute solution, if the solute follows Henry's law, the solvent necessarily approaches ideal behavior (Raoult's law).
