How does boiling point depend on external pressure and why?
Expert Answer
Boiling point is not a fixed temp. but its the temp when liquid and vapour phase are in equilibrium. If we manage to achieve this equilibrium at a different temp then boiling point will also change. Boiling occurs when Vapor Pressure = External Pressure. If external pressure is higher, liquid molecules need more kinetic energy (higher temperature) to escape and form vapor bubbles that can withstand that pressure without collapsing.
