Osmosis & Osmotic PressureSolutions

What is the principle behind Reverse Osmosis used in desalination?.

Expert Answer

Applying a pressure greater than the osmotic pressure to the solution side forces solvent molecules to move from solution to pure solvent. This is exactly opposite of achieving equilibrium, as here we are making a concentrated solution more concentrated and dilute one more dilute.
