Questions/Solutions/Why does the Molarit...
Concentration TermsSolutions

Why does the Molarity of a solution change when heated, while its Molality remains constant?.

Expert Answer

Molarity is defined as moles per Liter of solution. Since liquids expand or contract with temperature, the volume (denominator) changes, altering the Molarity. Molality is defined as moles per Kilogram of solvent. Since mass does not change with temperature, Molality remains stable.
