Question

Given below are two statements:

Statement-I: Noble gases have very high boiling points. Statement-II: Noble gases are monoatomic gases. They are held together by strong dispersion forces. Because of this they are liquefied at very low temperature. Hence, they have very high boiling points.

In the light of the above statements, choose the correct answer from the options given below:

Options
  1. a

    Statement I is false but Statement II is true

  2. b

    Both Statement I and Statement II are true

  3. c

    Statement I is true but Statement II is false

  4. d

    Both Statement I and Statement II are false

Correct Answerd

Both Statement I and Statement II are false

Detailed Solution

Strategy: Review the physical properties and inter-atomic forces in Noble gases.

Step 1: Analysis of Statement I Noble gases have very low boiling points (e.g., Helium BP 4.2 K\approx 4.2 \text{ K}), the lowest among all elements. Statement I is false.

Step 2: Analysis of Statement II Noble gases are held together strictly by weak dispersion (London) forces, not strong ones. This is why they are extremely difficult to liquefy and have low boiling points. Statement II is false.

Answer: (Option) [d] Both Statement I and Statement II are false\boxed{\text{Answer: (Option) [d] Both Statement I and Statement II are false}}
