Solutions · Class 12 · JEE Main Previous Year Question
Two open beakers one containing a solvent and the other containing a mixture of that solvent with a non volatile solute are together sealed in a container. Over time:
- a✓
the volume of the solution increases and the volume of the solvent decreases
- b
the volume of the solution decreases and the volume of the solvent increases
- c
the volume of the solution and the solvent does not change
- d
the volume of the solution does not change and the volume of the solvent decreases
the volume of the solution increases and the volume of the solvent decreases
Strategy:\n> Solvent always moves toward the region of lower vapour pressure. According to Raoult's Law, a solution has a lower vapour pressure than a pure solvent.\n\nMechanism:\n1. At equilibrium within the sealed container, there is a common vapour phase.\n2. The pure solvent has a higher vapour pressure () compared to the solution ().\n3. Solvent evaporates from the beaker of pure solvent to maintain its higher saturation pressure.\n4. However, this same vapour is "over-saturated" relative to the solution beaker, so it condenses into the solution.\n5. Net Result: Over time, the pure solvent beaker empties (volume decreases) and the solution beaker fills up (volume increases).\n\n
